During a recent episode of The Late Late Show, host James Corden addressed the “very, very serious allegations” that have been made against him about the fan-favorite segment Carpool Karaoke. Last week, a video went viral that appeared to reveal Corden wasn’t driving while filming the segment with Justin Bieber, as the car was instead being pulled by a tow truck. Corden felt it was time to address the controversy.

Corden told his audience that he wanted to get ahead of everything and address the rumors to assure his audience that the accusations aren’t true.

“I am of course talking about the people saying that I don’t drive the car during Carpool Karaoke. Now I really hate that I’m about to say this but, fake news,” Corden said.

He admitted that the footage “looks bad,” but he explained that he always drives the car unless they are doing something where it might not be safe, like a dance routine, a costume change, or if he’s drunk.

Corden said that in the case of the Bieber video they used a tow truck because of a safety issue. He then confessed that the real reason was because he just couldn’t stop “getting lost in his eyes.”

Corden also shared some of his favorite headlines about the story, including one from The Guardian that read, “The worst lie since Santa: Why Carpool Karaoke is TV’s biggest con.”

“Look, I’m just shocked that I’ve done something that’s upset people more than Cats,” joked Corden, who was part of the cast of Cats which has received nothing but negative reviews and tanked at the box office.

Corden swore that 95 percent of the time he really is endangering the lives of the world’s biggest pop stars. But, it’s a TV show and not everything is real. He gave examples, like taping the show at 5:00 pm and pretending it’s midnight.

“It’s TV and sometimes we do stuff just for the sake of entertainment, but when it comes to Carpool — except for very rare exceptions for safety — I am driving the car and I want credit for it because I was raised driving on a completely different side of the road,” said Corden.

James Corden also shared the list of Carpool Karaoke segments where he didn’t actually drive the car, which included Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Cardi B, Meghan Trainor, and Migos. He then showed the extremely long list of segments where he did actually drive the car, and proceeded to promote the new season of Carpool Karaoke the Series.
