Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier was arrested and held in custody by French police on Monday after it was reported he struck an officer outside a nightclub.

According to police sources via AFP (h/t Sky Sports), he is alleged to have "insulted and hit a police officer” outside the venue in the French capital. PSG also confirmed that the 23-year-old was detained.

Per a legal source cited by AFP, it’s suggested the Ivory Coast international “elbowed” the policeman in the throat during the incident and was held at a police station in Paris due to “deliberate violence against a person of public authority.”

BBC.com reported on Tuesday that "Aurier will be tried on 26 September for an alleged assault on a police officer."

Conflicting reports regarding Aurier's status have emerged since his arrest, with Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC passing along a report from L'Equipe saying that his stay in custody has been extended 24 hours. However, an earlier report from Get French Football News citing AFP sources said Aurier had been released by authorities.

It's also been noted that this arrest could prompt PSG to move on from the player:
